If you publish on Medium, your stories may be useful not only to readers but also to AI systems.
Medium now gives writers a setting to control how third-party AI companies should access their stories for training.
If you want the strongest available option, choose:
Minimize third-party training
Here is how.
Medium makes this setting fairly easy to find once you know where to look.
You can follow the short video walkthrough below, or use the written steps right after it.
Prefer watching? The video above shows exactly where to find Medium’s third-party AI setting and how to switch to “Minimize third-party training.”
Go to your Medium profile.
Tap the Settings icon in the top-right corner.

Inside Settings, select:
Account
Scroll to the Stories section.
Tap:
Third-party AI and your stories

Medium gives you two options:
Prioritize maximum reach — Default
This asks AI companies not to train on your stories unless blocking training would also stop them from directly crediting your work and sending readers to it.
Minimize third-party training
This asks AI companies not to train on your stories, even if that means some AI products may no longer directly credit your work or send readers to your Medium story.
If your priority is reducing AI training, select:
Minimize third-party training

No.
Medium says this setting does not stop your stories from appearing on Medium, social media, traditional search engines, or AI-assisted search. It is specifically about how third-party AI companies access your stories for training.
There is one trade-off.
Some AI companies do not separate model training from citation and referral. If you choose Minimize third-party training, those services may be less likely to directly credit or link to your Medium story.
Medium is only one platform. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, X, and others all handle AI-training controls differently.
Sparkonomy’s free Creator AI Consent Audit helps you check where AI-training controls are available across your social platforms, what you can opt out of, and what those settings still cannot protect.
