Substack says it does not use publisher content to train generative AI models that could recreate a creator’s work. It also gives publishers a setting to tell third-party AI tools not to use their content for training.

Log in to Substack and open your publication.
Go to:
Settings
Scroll through Settings until you find:
AI training protection
Depending on the version of your dashboard, this may appear under the Privacy section.
Turn on AI training protection.
Substack says this setting tells third-party AI tools, including services such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, not to scrape and use your published content for model training.
Not necessarily.
Substack says the setting only works with AI tools that respect the signal. It cannot guarantee that every crawler or AI company on the web will follow it.
There may also be a trade-off. Blocking AI training can reduce how your publication appears in some AI-generated search or discovery experiences.
Substack is only one place where your work may appear. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Medium, YouTube, X, and other platforms all handle AI-training controls differently.
