At Sparkonomy, we study how Creators of every size get commercially discovered. The pattern is consistent: nano and micro Creators who make themselves easy to find and evaluate win paid deals independently, often before agencies would ever consider them for a roster.
Priya had 9,000 followers.
She made short videos about tiny apartment cooking.
Her comments were full of “please make more!”
But her income? Almost nothing.
One night she typed a question into Google.
“Do I need an agency to get paid brand deals?”
She kept reading the same sad answer.
“Just grow your audience. Post consistently. Brands will find you.”
So she waited. And waited.
Meanwhile she watched three bigger Creators land the exact deals she wanted.
“The same 5 people get every campaign,” she thought.
Here’s what Priya didn’t know.
Brands weren’t ignoring her because her content was weak.
They simply couldn’t see her. She wasn’t findable to anyone with a budget.
That gap, being visible to followers but invisible to buyers, is what this guide fixes.
Most Creators are independent and unsigned. Agency rosters cover only a small slice of a fast-growing population. The Influencer Marketing Hub Benchmark Report notes that brands increasingly run campaigns with smaller, non-agency Creators through marketplaces and direct outreach. Agencies, by design, represent only a limited roster. The Creator population, meanwhile, grows into the millions. That math means most talented Creators will never sit on a roster, no matter how good they are.
The cost of not knowing this is quiet but real. Many Creators believe they must be “spotted” first. So they wait. While they wait, they stay invisible to marketers with budgets and miss inbound offers they could have won today. If you feel stuck because you don’t have an agency, know this: you’re not undertalented, you’re undiscovered.
Getting brand deals without an agency works when a brand finds you directly and reaches out, or when you pitch them yourself. No middle person is needed.
In conversations with independent Creators, one pattern keeps coming up. Take one home-organization Creator with around 12,000 followers. She had no agency, and like many Creators, she assumed brands only worked with bigger names.
So she tried something new. She listed her niche, her audience type, and her contact info on a Creator marketplace. A marketplace works like a searchable directory, not a waiting room.
A few weeks later, a cleaning-product brand searched that marketplace. They wanted small, trusted home Creators. They found her, checked her engagement, and sent a direct offer.
So the brand came to her. No agent, no pitching, no waiting. She’d simply made herself easy to find and easy to check.
According to the Influencer Marketing Hub, Creator marketplaces and direct brand outreach are now among the most common ways brands source talent. That’s a big shift from the old “agency-only” world.
Based on our work with independent Creators, the single most misunderstood part of getting brand deals without an agency is thinking discovery is passive. It isn’t. The Creators who win deals independently make their niche, rates, and contact details findable, turning themselves from invisible to searchable. — Sparkonomy Team
Let’s look at two more Creators. Neither joined a marketplace, and neither has an agency.
A typical scenario: inbound through commercial visibility. Take a nano food Creator with around 6,000 followers on Instagram. She didn’t join a marketplace. Instead, she cleaned up her bio. She added a clear line about her niche, a simple rate card link, and a working email. One month later, a spice brand found her through social search while looking for small food voices. They liked her engagement and sent an inbound DM. Because her email was right there, the deal moved fast. She earned her first paid partnership without ever “waiting to be spotted.” The key takeaway: being contactable is a discovery tactic, not an afterthought.
The second path looks nothing like the first. Picture a faceless B2B Creator making short software explainers. High views, zero brand deals, for months. So he stopped waiting and emailed five software brands directly, each with one strong result and a simple offer. One said yes. He delivered well, and that brand told a partner company about him. That referral became deal number two, with no pitching at all. One independent win often quietly builds the next through word of mouth.
Across these stories, you can see the six ways brands discover independent talent: marketplaces, direct pitches, inbound enquiries, referrals and word of mouth, social search, and Creator-facing platforms.
Pro tip: Most independent deals we see don’t come from one big viral moment. They come from Creators who made themselves easy to evaluate in under two minutes: a clear niche, one strong result, and a working email.
Myth: Great content alone pulls in brand deals.
Reality: Here’s the uncomfortable part. The algorithm is not on your side here. It’s built to keep viewers watching, not to help a marketer with a budget find you. Great content only pays once you’re findable. Why it matters: Waiting to be spotted keeps you invisible to the people who actually pay.
Myth: Nano and micro Creators can’t win deals alone.
Reality: Brands actively seek smaller Creators for high engagement and real trust. Many of these Creators would never reach an agency roster anyway. Why it matters: “Too small” thinking stops you from using channels that are open to you right now.
Myth: You need an agency’s permission to earn from brands. Reality: Agencies are one route with limited seats, not a permission slip. Why it matters: Believing this hands away control you already hold.
If you’re a nano or micro Creator, here’s the freeing part. You don’t need permission or a roster seat to earn from partnerships. You need to be commercially findable and easy to evaluate. That single shift, from waiting to being searchable, changes everything about how brand deals for influencers actually happen for people your size.
Here’s what to do with this insight:
An agency can be genuinely valuable later. When your deal flow gets heavy, contracts turn complex, or you simply want business development handled, representation can be worth the trade-off (usually a percentage of your earnings and less day-to-day control). It’s a route, not a rule.
